The Real McKenzies

5/5/04 Echo Lounge Review

by BMF

Finally, some fresh hard fucking punk rock that stands on its own in every aspect. The Real McKenzies are the real deal in every way I can think of. They are cool friendly guys, they play HARD whether it is to an audience of 50 or 5000. There are six members in this tribe and one of them plays the BAG PIPES. Yep, I said Bag Pipes. If you were like me you are wondering how in the hell can bag pipes be in a punk rock band….well trust me….This is a PUNK ROCK MOTHERFUCKER BAND and the bag pipes sound COOL AS HELL. Matt, the bag pipe guy, pulls it off with ease and in true punk rock form. I’m not sure even how to describe how fucking cool it is. You have to go see this band..no.. you MUST go see this band if you get the chance. You won’t be disappointed. They have a duel guitar attack that would send any metal freak back to beginner lessons. They got a new drummer that SMASHES the skins. And then there is the bass player, the only one of the bunch that wore a shirt. Then of course comes Paul the lead singer, the ringmaster, the vet punker that truly believes in what he is doing. A true punker that for him the meaning of punk rock is still revolt against the gov, establishment and such. He has an intesity onstage that we haven’t seen for quite some time. Strong calculated gestures. It was a pleasure to see him and the band perform and an honor to talk with him before the show. When was the last time you went to a show and afterwards went to the merchandise table and bought every CD the group had to sell. Last night we did just that. They are that good. Below you will bits of our conversation.

We headed to The Echo Lounge last night not really knowing what to expect. The night exceeded our expectations to say the least. As I was waiting on an overpriced absolut and bourbon, a guy was standing there in a kilt so I introduced myself and he said he was in The Real McKenzies and his name was Paul. I told him about MusicFilter and he wondered if we wanted to ask him any questions. He came over to our table and took the time to visit with us about various stuff. We were not prepared to do any kind of interview so we just shot the shit.

Paul lives in Germany while the rest of the band lives in Vancouver if I heard him right. We talked about whether or not Ozzy was selling himself out and we agreed that hell no he isn’t. He paid his dues and he should be able to do whatever the fuck he wants and he is still cool as hell. A sell out, Paul said is someone like Fogerty’s brother doing what he did. Paul shares MusicFilter’s stance on downloading music in that he feels that the more you can get your music out there the better. He says he feels like once people hear his band that if they dig it, that they will go buy the product. We told him that was definately true for us that we search daily for new music and when we find something that really moves us we immediatly go buy it. The one place he said he would like to play is the MOON. When I asked him what type of music he liked to listen to the most and he said he really likes old jazz and R&B the most but still likes punk rock. He said the latest good thing he has heard is the new TSOL album (which I will now have to check out). Overall he said people are the same everywhere you go. Everywhere includes, Croatia, Slovenia and tons of other obscure places he named off that I can’t remember right now. They tour constantly. The most people they have played in front of is around 30,000 and they were asked to headline a punk rock festival in Europe but when they found out that Stiff Little Fingers would be opening for them they respectfully bowed out to a band they admired and became the openers. A couple of shows that Paul has seen that stood out for him were the Bellrays and the Spits.

The band that inspired Paul to get into all this was the MC5. He went to see them when he was 14 years old and shortly after he ran away to start and band and the rest is history. After he saw the MC5 he traveled over 2000 miles to see the hot new thing at the time, The Sex Pistols in Texas. He said he was very excited to see the band and meet them. He walked up to Steve Jones to shake his hand, and the handshake he got back as a limp wet rude noodle. From that point on he swore that if he were in the same position he would take the time and CARE about the people who came to see him. So there we sat, in Echo Lounge, sipping booze and shootin’ the shit with one of the coolest nicest guys we’ve met, band or no band. Thanks a lot Paul for taking the time. You have to new fans who can’t wait till the next time you find your way to Atlanta, GA

The Oblivians

The Oblivians

December 29th, 2005 by BMF

BMF-GROUPIE is the absolute best cool music finder on this earth. For X-Mas she found this amazing band called The Oblivians who hail from Memphis. It appears as though the band has broken up but the music on “Sympathy Sessions” is incredible and great and rock and roll the way it was meant to be played, with lots of hip grabbin’, whiskey swiggin’ swagger. So far my favorite song is “Feel Real Good“. Eric Oblivian went on to form Goner Records with what looks to be a lot of cool music and ’stuff’. An interview with Eric is here.

“Feel Real Good” from Sympathy Sessions by Oblivians

BMF reposted this on January 3, 2006 when he moved MusicFilter to the new wordpress format.

Updated on 8/28/20 including some links. “Feel Real Good” is still amazing. ~mc~ #57bmf4ever

I Walk The Line
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I’ll admit that I’m a fool for you
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I’ve known proves that it’s right
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

You’ve got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can’t hide
For you I know I’d even try to turn the tide
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

John Lydon answered questions in a webchat with the Sun Online and as usual with anything he says it was very interesting. Included is his response to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When asked if he would play with the Pistols again he said “I could see a day when we played live together again – but only if it was in Japan and for plenty of filthy yen! My moral code isn’t that strict..”

David Lee Roth

December 17th, 2005 by BMF

December 16, 2005

Diamond Dave talks with the NY Times…in a hotel…its a great great preview as to what will come on “FREE FM”.

Here are some bits of the article:
“I think I’m the one single voice who has united the liberal left with the Nascar voting bloc,” he says of the audience for his music, which encompasses six multiplatinum Van Halen albums and eight solo releases. Different gig: Mr. Roth is just a few weeks from taking over what he describes as “the hottest seat in American radio,” Mr. Stern’s at WXRK-FM, a job for which he deems himself uniquely qualified: Sure he can sing, but as a conversationalist, just wait, he will knock your socks off.

“Come on, I can bond with a fire hydrant,” he says, explaining his faith in his conversational prowess. “I can interview a Dalmatian,” he adds. “It’s about the capacity to entertain, like at a really good Algonquin table. I’ve got a fourth-degree black belt in conversation; I think in bold caps!” Obviously.

HE is not, by the way, out to attempt anything so gauche as to replace Mr. Stern. “I’m not the new Howard,” Mr. Roth says. “Your editorial bias is entirely based on your memories, and I couldn’t think of more diverse backgrounds than between the two of us. The only thing I have distinctly in common with Howard is a wicked sense of humor. And Hanukkah.”

His 6-to-10-a.m. slot starts Jan. 3 at the newly dubbed FREE FM, his home studio in New York City. (The first guest is his Uncle Manny Roth, who ran the storied Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village.) His only diva-esque request for revamping Mr. Stern’s space was the installation of a 10-by-10-foot patch of parquet floor. He is an incorrigible pacer – “I call it Dave’s famous walk to nowhere” – and plans to do his show standing up. Wearing army boots

Roth sings on versions of “Jump” and “Jamie’s Cryin'”. Other VH favorites given the bluegrass treatment include “I’ll Wait”, “Hot for Teacher” (by David Grisman and Sons), “Eruption”, “Panama” and “Unchained”.

Google Music Search

December 15th, 2005 by BMF

December 15, 2005

Google has just launched a music-specific search engine… mirroring successful services involving news, photos, and shopping results. The music offering, which went live early this morning, delivers artist-related images, lyrics, reviews, discographies, and news, as well as links to purchase CDs and downloads. The suite of results can be triggered by simply entering a music-specific query, like “Prince,” “All-American Rejects,” or “Mozart”. Several digital music stores are represented in the e-commerce results set, including iTunes, MSN Music, CD Universe, Rhapsody, and Wal-Mart. The service also aggregates reviews from sources including Rolling Stone, Canoe, and Blender, and compiles a consensus rating (out of five stars). Links to relevant lyrics sites are organized within song-specific pages….
I bet publishers won’t like this service.

The original punk rock comedian Richard Pryor died today of a heart attack. Dammit.

Death to the original punk rock comedian

December 10th, 2005 by BMF

Richard Pryor died today in a hospital close to home in Encino, CA. I remember Richard this way: My dad rented a video of Richards..around the 80’s…the first time I heard the word MOTHERFUCKER on a tv. He was raw for sure…a bet a lot of people in the comedy and film industry are thanking their lucky asses that Richard Pryor was born into this world..hence their carreers.

Prince’s “New” deal

Prince signs new deal with Uninversal and is expected to hit the road again following the next release…imagine that seeing how his last tour for Musicology made over 90 MILLION dollars. Like his last deal with Sony’s Columbia label, the deal looks like a “one off deal”.

The Music Industry goes after lyrics sites and tabulature sites. It has shut numerous sites down already.

Google has recognized MusicFilter.com once again in the top 2 spots. The ironic thing is the post they grabbed for the top spot was about google putting MusicFilter at the top spot before. Time to celebrate.

Steve Jones talks to the LA Times about the Pistols recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Thats really nice Steve but I still can’t wait to hear what Johnny has to say about it.
