Old Skars & Upstarts 2004

Official Site(dead link-left for reference)

(link update on 8/25/20 – Disaster Records has been long gone. BMF mentions it in one of his podcasts. Here is a great summary of the old Scars and Upstarts series. Not sure how Duane continues to survive, but BMF loved Duane Peters and would want this info updated.)

Anyway on with the show. ~mc~

Old Skars & Upstarts 2004

I’ve had this CD for about a month now and when I first listened to it a few tracks struck me as awesome. I stuck the CD in my car and have been listening to it now everyday pretty much. Each time I like each song a bit more. From what I understand Duane Peters puts these comps together himself and if that is the case this guy has got an ear for music like no other. EVERY SINGLE FUCKING SONG is a great song but for me personally The District – No Heart is my favorite as of today. Each day I listen, I have a new favorite and now they are all my faves. And why can’t I find any info on this band? The search will continue as it will for every band on this CD. They all kick ass in their own unique way. I was determined to keep my list of 28 albums everyone should own to just that…..25, but everytime I climb into my car to fight the dumbasses on the highways I have finally convinced myself that this CD belongs in the top 10 best comps I’ve ever heard. This is exactly what I hope MusicFilter can put together one day. A comp CD that is good from song one to the last track and only bands and songs that I like. Duane you inspire in ways you may not even realize.

Thanks to all the bands who answered my email for their info….

4/14/05 The Kills at The Earl review (by BMF)

We went to this show with high hopes. While we have always loved The Kills first record, the latest one, No Wow sounded good but didn’t have the same ooomph as their first. They sounded good but for some reason we just didn’t dig it like we thought. Maybe it was all the emo-freaks in the crowd. Photos.

7/21/2019 ~mc~ worked all day on the BMF Encyclopedia and got to the Kills who we fell for in 2003. That led me here to update this small MusicFilter tribute page. We did eventually get to see The Kills play live at the Earl in 2005, but wound up pretty disappointed in their show. Maybe it was the crowd as BMF thought but it was probably more that we were going to a lot of hard core crazy shows at that time and The Kills were not that kind of show. However their first album, “Keep on Your Mean Side” was punk as fuck and remains stellar on the turntable and will forever be in the rotation of every music server we own. The Kills are a piece of MusicFilter history and therefore our history. Their first album has the unique distinction of being the first album BMF reviewed and posted on MusicFilter and the first to earn a link on the sidebar. Ha! Not a big deal now but a BIG DEAL in 2003 when “blogging” was first getting started and getting a link on the sidebar was a special triumph. BMF took some fairly awful Makers Mark fueled photos with his Olympus Digital Camera that night in 2005 and the SWF file he made to archive the photos has since bitten the dust, but I was able to find them on the server at musicfilter.net and happily restored them into a gallery. As I view them now I don’t care about the quality, but remember the Earl’s dark vibe and the memory of how any night with BMF was a good night. I miss him so much. #57bmf4ever

BMF was a rebellious smoker. Alison Mosshart or “VV” as she liked to be called in 2003 was/is a rebellious smoker.

Check out the whole album on you tube but you would be best to just get the damn thing for yourself.
Do people still do that? Would you make this sound for me? Alison is rad and The Kills kill it!

MusicFilter Vinyl

6/8/2019 – it’s 12:25 AM and I just found all those little album covers in BMF digital storage and transferred them back into the folder where they belong. A content feeling came over me as all the little X’s filled in.

And it’s true that BMF collected and owns all of these albums and so many more. After MusicFilter crashed in 2014 he was unable to update his vinyl list. He always planned to return and update his list because he was a serious list maker and the king of all sorters. Before he died he started a project of a detailed archive for each album. He began this project on Facebook for some reason under his long time user name of MusicfilterGoAheadPunk. Some asshole complained that was not his real name and Facebook took down all of his hard work! He begged them to return his writings but they refused. He started over but it really gave him the blues and his heart was not in it for long. Or maybe he just didn’t feel good enough to continue after that disappointing situation. But for me whatever he left is precious.

After his death I tried to get Facebook to give back his writings too but they were just too hard to deal with and I gave up trying as I try to deal with my own grief. So fuck Facebook for spoiling his good intent. Bitches and Bastards!

I don’t really know who cares what albums BMF collected. I just know he cared about it and now I’m the caretaker of his albums. I’ll go through each of them one day and diary them all just for him. I enjoy having and caring about his albums. (On 1/29/2022 I finally brought a stack of albums to Redbud. I’m going to set up BMF’s upright record player and start playing every one. And I’m going to catalogue them again on Discogs. He had already set up an account there in 2014 but never started adding his collection, so let me try and finish it for him. #1 will be Iggy Pop.) The Oblivians

The Oblivians

December 29th, 2005 by BMF

BMF-GROUPIE is the absolute best cool music finder on this earth. For X-Mas she found this amazing band called The Oblivians who hail from Memphis. It appears as though the band has broken up but the music on “Sympathy Sessions” is incredible and great and rock and roll the way it was meant to be played, with lots of hip grabbin’, whiskey swiggin’ swagger. So far my favorite song is “Feel Real Good“. Eric Oblivian went on to form Goner Records with what looks to be a lot of cool music and ’stuff’. An interview with Eric is here.

“Feel Real Good” from Sympathy Sessions by Oblivians

BMF reposted this on January 3, 2006 when he moved MusicFilter to the new wordpress format.

Updated on 8/28/20 including some links. “Feel Real Good” is still amazing. ~mc~ #57bmf4ever

I Walk The Line
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day is through
Yes, I’ll admit that I’m a fool for you
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I’ve known proves that it’s right
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

You’ve got a way to keep me on your side
You give me cause for love that I can’t hide
For you I know I’d even try to turn the tide
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you’re mine, I walk the line

John Lydon answered questions in a webchat with the Sun Online and as usual with anything he says it was very interesting. Included is his response to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When asked if he would play with the Pistols again he said “I could see a day when we played live together again – but only if it was in Japan and for plenty of filthy yen! My moral code isn’t that strict..”

David Lee Roth

December 17th, 2005 by BMF

December 16, 2005

Diamond Dave talks with the NY Times…in a hotel…its a great great preview as to what will come on “FREE FM”.

Here are some bits of the article:
“I think I’m the one single voice who has united the liberal left with the Nascar voting bloc,” he says of the audience for his music, which encompasses six multiplatinum Van Halen albums and eight solo releases. Different gig: Mr. Roth is just a few weeks from taking over what he describes as “the hottest seat in American radio,” Mr. Stern’s at WXRK-FM, a job for which he deems himself uniquely qualified: Sure he can sing, but as a conversationalist, just wait, he will knock your socks off.

“Come on, I can bond with a fire hydrant,” he says, explaining his faith in his conversational prowess. “I can interview a Dalmatian,” he adds. “It’s about the capacity to entertain, like at a really good Algonquin table. I’ve got a fourth-degree black belt in conversation; I think in bold caps!” Obviously.

HE is not, by the way, out to attempt anything so gauche as to replace Mr. Stern. “I’m not the new Howard,” Mr. Roth says. “Your editorial bias is entirely based on your memories, and I couldn’t think of more diverse backgrounds than between the two of us. The only thing I have distinctly in common with Howard is a wicked sense of humor. And Hanukkah.”

His 6-to-10-a.m. slot starts Jan. 3 at the newly dubbed FREE FM, his home studio in New York City. (The first guest is his Uncle Manny Roth, who ran the storied Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village.) His only diva-esque request for revamping Mr. Stern’s space was the installation of a 10-by-10-foot patch of parquet floor. He is an incorrigible pacer – “I call it Dave’s famous walk to nowhere” – and plans to do his show standing up. Wearing army boots

Roth sings on versions of “Jump” and “Jamie’s Cryin'”. Other VH favorites given the bluegrass treatment include “I’ll Wait”, “Hot for Teacher” (by David Grisman and Sons), “Eruption”, “Panama” and “Unchained”.

Google Music Search

December 15th, 2005 by BMF

December 15, 2005

Google has just launched a music-specific search engine… mirroring successful services involving news, photos, and shopping results. The music offering, which went live early this morning, delivers artist-related images, lyrics, reviews, discographies, and news, as well as links to purchase CDs and downloads. The suite of results can be triggered by simply entering a music-specific query, like “Prince,” “All-American Rejects,” or “Mozart”. Several digital music stores are represented in the e-commerce results set, including iTunes, MSN Music, CD Universe, Rhapsody, and Wal-Mart. The service also aggregates reviews from sources including Rolling Stone, Canoe, and Blender, and compiles a consensus rating (out of five stars). Links to relevant lyrics sites are organized within song-specific pages….
I bet publishers won’t like this service.

The original punk rock comedian Richard Pryor died today of a heart attack. Dammit.

Death to the original punk rock comedian

December 10th, 2005 by BMF

Richard Pryor died today in a hospital close to home in Encino, CA. I remember Richard this way: My dad rented a video of Richards..around the 80’s…the first time I heard the word MOTHERFUCKER on a tv. He was raw for sure…a bet a lot of people in the comedy and film industry are thanking their lucky asses that Richard Pryor was born into this world..hence their carreers.

Prince’s “New” deal

Prince signs new deal with Uninversal and is expected to hit the road again following the next release…imagine that seeing how his last tour for Musicology made over 90 MILLION dollars. Like his last deal with Sony’s Columbia label, the deal looks like a “one off deal”.

The Music Industry goes after lyrics sites and tabulature sites. It has shut numerous sites down already.
