Why Rock Sucks

Songwriting legend Joni Mitchell says it was the industry machine that made her famous that eventually drove her away from her passion.

“I will not go through that process again,” Mitchell admits to interviewer Rosanna Arquette in the rock documentary “All We Are Saying.” “I don’t think there’s anybody in the industry that likes the music. … I think there’s a general policy of ‘hate the artists.'”

It’s no secret that traditional touring rockers hate the way media conglomerates, MTV and pop music have changed the face of music. But Arquette’s film, which airs on Showtime on March 8, gathers together an overwhelming collection of testimonials on the subject by artists like Sting, Elton John, David Crosby, Steven Tyler, Peter Gabriel and Tom Petty.

“There was a time when our catalogue was worth $24 million, now it’s worth like 12 cents,” moans Tyler, Aerosmith’s lead singer. “Why? Because anybody can download anything on the Internet. The only thing an artist today is worth is his happiness, integrity and hard tickets.”

“When I look at it now, it looks like professional wrestling to me,” whines Petty. Fans “know it’s fake, but they don’t really care.” Arquette, who also interviewed younger stars like will.i.am from the Black Eyed Peas, Macy Gray and Gwen Stefani, said part of what she wanted to look at in her film was this sense of despair for the industry.

“Most true artists care about music as a pure, passionate art form, but can get caught in the trap of the business,” Arquette explained. “Which, sadly, has now become more important than the artist or even the music itself.”

The big media companies who run the labels “haven’t a clue,” lamented Crosby, of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. They “wouldn’t know a song if it flew up their noses and died … . That’s what puts Britney Spears, who is about as deep as a birdbath, in front of Joni Mitchell.” As for Pretenders lead singer Chrissy Hynde, she has her own problems with modern rock.

“Fashion has destroyed everything I like about rock and roll,” she laughed. “It was a blow to me when I got pregnant and had to wear a nursing bra on stage.”

That, Hynde says, she got over quickly.

“[Bleep] it, if I wear it, it’s rock!”

Johnny Rotten on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

‘That place does perpetrate some incredible nonsenses – like if it wasn’t for the Ramones there’d be no Sex Pistols. Well, it’s bollocks, isn’t it? That’s not acceptable. It’s funded by major record companies and the industry never appreciated us. If the museum wants to offer us some kind of plastic cup then the answer is no.’

The Ultimate Driving Song – Slayer – Killing Fields

I drive around alot in my job and have to come to have a new and now favorite driving song that always makes my drive better no matter what conditions I’m facing. Tonight I had to go pick up a bird through a total of 20 traffic lights in rush hour traffic. Luckily I had my favorite driving song by Slayer called Killing Fields from the Devine Intervention album. The opening music before anyone starts singing is fucking incredible and intense and heavy and my favorite part of the song. The guitar is amazing. My next favorite part of the song is when Tom Araya begins singing. My next favorite part of the song is the next music only part which is even heavier then the beginning. My next favorite part is when Tom Araya starts singing again.

This fucking song is THE DRIVING SONG. I put it against anything anyone else has to say ’bout it.

By the way…the eagle landed safely.

KILLING FIELDS

You know the feeling
When adrenaline takes control
Can’t beat the rush
That leaves a suicidal hold

Instinct spares no one
Destroying the human heart
The taste of blood
Can rip your soul apart

Devils that drive us
Do not discriminate
A state of mind
That becomes the ultimate end

Action reaction
Blood line is not immune
To the depth of human nature
Inside of me and you

A sociopath with empty eyes
And no soul
Paranoid psychotic heart of stone
My blood runs cold

Evils of passion
Can drive reason to extremes
Love hate and murder
Temporary insanity

On the edge of a
Demented personality
Emotional
Pain is a deadly reality

A sociopath with empty eyes
And no soul
Paranoid psychotic heart of stone
My blood runs cold

A choice is made of free will
Just like the choice to kill
Decisions to lose control
My self-destructive rationale

A choice is made, made of free will
Just like the choice, the choice to kill
In the speed of a moment
Life stands still now you’re standing in my killing field

(Lead: King)

A choice is made of free will
Just like the choice to kill
In the speed of a moment
Life stands still now you’re standing in my killing field
